What Is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a condition in which defective cells in the breast grow out of control. Subsequently, this can create tumors that can metastasize to other parts of the body with potentially deadly consequences. It can begin in the lobules, ducts or connective tissue of the breast.

What Are The Causes?

Breast cancer is most common in women and those over 50, although men and younger people can develop it. Studies also show a link between a mutation on the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and this condition. Women with a long reproductive history, denser breasts or a family history of this condition are also at greater risk. While some cases are inevitable, staying physically active, controlling weight and avoiding alcohol and cigarettes can all reduce your risk.

How Do We Treat Breast Cancer?

There are a number of effective methods of breast cancer treatment, including radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. Surgical Services of Athens performs surgical intervention for breast conditions. This may include a breast biopsy,  to determine if a tumor is malignant, lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, which removes the malignancy but conserves the remainder of the breast, and in certain circumstances a mastectomy, which removes the entire breast. We may sample or remove lymph nodes in the axillae as well.  While surgery is a major component of treatment, chemotherapy and possibly radiation therapy managed by oncologists are also treatments that may be indicated. We strive to maintain close coordination with your oncologists on a regular basis.
