
Dr. Phil Tranqui moved his surgical practice to Athens in 2020. Prior to Athens, he was a surgeon in the East Alabama area for 14 years. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Tranqui grew up in Ottawa, Canada. He attended the University of Ottawa and obtained Bachelors in both Science (Biology, Honors) and Arts (Psychology). In 2001 he received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Ottawa. He then spent the next five years successfully completing General Surgery residency at the University of Ottawa – Ottawa Hospital. During this period, he served as Chief Resident and was the recipient of multiple accolades including the Heringer Award, CAGS/Merck Frosst Resident Award for Teaching Excellence and the CAGS Achievement Award. He is the author of several scientific publications. In 2006, he started practicing surgery in Valley, AL.
Dr. Tranqui enjoys spending time with his family and his overly energetic dog Ruby. An ardent traveler, some of his favorite destinations include Italy, Vietnam and Iceland. He is a self-proclaimed foodie and (according to his wife) runs excessively. While you may see him at a local 5k, his true passion is trail running and ultramarathons. In 2017 he completed a 100 mile race from Heflin to Sylacauga, AL on the Pinhoti Trail.
